Department Spotlight – Hand Surgery
In every issue, the Physician Connection will feature a service of McLaren Oakland that some of your patients may need. This issue features the hospital’s hand surgery program.
Dr. Uzma Rehman, who has been in practice for seventeen years, is a hand surgeon on staff at McLaren Oakland and McLaren Macomb. Board certified in orthopedic surgery with a fellowship and certification of added qualifications in hand surgery, she handles both acute and chronic conditions of the hand, forearm, elbow, or fingers.
Dr Rehman treats patients of all ages – from newborns to seniors. Types of conditions she treats include the following:
- Deformities in newborns
- Injuries, from trauma to fractures in hands, wrists, elbows or fingers
- Tendonitis
- Carpel tunnel
- Ulnar nerve damage
Surgery is performed at McLaren Oakland on Mondays, Wednesdays and when emergencies arise.
If a patient needs aftercare, Dr Rehman’s staff can provide some of this care, such as teach scar massage or provide splints. Patients needing physical therapy can get this treatment at Dr. Rehman’s Macomb or Bloomfield office, or a facility more convenient to the patient.
Dr. Rehman works with each patient’s primary care physician to keep them updated on their patient’s condition. Each referring physician receives a thank you letter that includes the diagnosis and treatment plan. If a patient returns to Dr Rehman for any aftercare, she sends the referring physician progress notes on his or her patient.
Dr Rehman’s specialized training and focus on hand disorders set her apart from other surgeons when it comes to any condition related to the hand, wrist, elbow or fingers. Additionally she said, “My staff and I treat patients how we or any of our family members would want to be treated.”
