Corticosteroid Injections
For inflammation of the hand or wrist, a corticosteroid injection or patch may be prescribed in order to help restore functionality. Hand and wrist inflammation often occur as a result of arthritis or tendonitis. A corticosteroid is a steroid that works to reduce the amount of inflammation. It limits the body’s release of chemicals within the affected area that are responsible for producing the inflammation.
Steroids for inflammation are becoming increasingly popular because of their ability to speed up the patient’s recovery and make mobility much more comfortable in the long run, and the end result is much less swelling and much less pain in the hand, wrist, or joints.
At Midwest Hand Therapy, we use a comprehensive approach to hand rehabilitation; depending upon the condition, a corticosteroid may accompany hand exercises, hot and cold modalities, and massage.
