Hand Edema Reduction & Control
Hand edema, also called “puffy hand syndrome” is something that can we often treat. Abnormal amounts of fluid located in the hand) can be linked to multiple underlying conditions including trauma, salt retention, lymphedema, liver and heart conditions, cellulitis, pregnancy and more.
Hand edema is very uncomfortable for patients, as it results in painful, stiff hands which can even limit one’s occupational performance. Those suffering from hand edema should see a certified hand therapist for occupational therapy of the hand. If left untreated, the condition will only worsen, and in severe cases hand edema can result in the loss of function of the hand.
Edema treatment may include a variety of hot and cold modalities, massage, and exercises. Strategic mobility and exercises are important to restore function of the hand as best as possible, and to control the condition so that it does not worsen over time. Our hand therapists, in conjunction with Dr. Rehman, designs treatment plans that are individualized to meet the needs of every patient.
